Calgary Information

Calgary is located in the foothills of the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains (elevation 3,439 feet).  In 1875 the North West Mounted Police built Fort Calgary at the junctions the Bow and Elbow Rivers, from those beginning rose the City of Calgary.  Calgary's economy has always been tied to the land that surrounds it, the economy was built on 2 major industries - cattle and oil.

The first big boom came in 1883 when the Canadian Pacific Railroad arrived and opened the area to settlers, farmers and ranchers. Calgary today is a major centre for agriculture and agro/related industries, such as food processing, livestock, grain handling, and farm equipment.

The first big oil strike was near Pincher Creek in 1902, followed by the Turner Valley oil boom of 1914. Today, Calgary is the energy capital of Canada, with more than 80% of all Canadian oil & gas producers located here.

The new economy of Calgary still has its roots in the land with agriculture and oil, but is expanding into the high tech and corporate arenas.
